Jane's Maple Bread Pudding

3 cups (3 slices) cubed homemade bread
1/3 cup raisins
2 egg yolks
1 3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup granular maple sugar (or brown)
Grated nutmeg

Butter a glass baking dish and put in the bread cubes and raisins. Whisk together the egg yolks, milk and maple sugar. Pour over the bread cubes, grate nutmeg over the top, and let stand 15 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Set baking dish in a pan of hot water and bake, uncovered, for 40 - 45 minutes, until firm in the center. Serve hot or cold.

For a fancy dish: Beat 2 egg whites with 1 tablespoon of maple sugar. Spoon over the hot pudding and return to a 350 degree oven for 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

(Personal Comment: Store bought bread works just fine too!)
